    Possible May Road Trip

Here is an idea for a road trip in May.

I visited Dolphin Island Care in Key Largo last week. They are a caring facility that does work with special needs families and also disabled veterans by using their dolphins as an interactive approach with these less fortunate folks. We can take a tour of the place for $18 per person and they also offer other up close and personal experiences with the dolphins for additional charge. You can read about everything they do and offer on their web site.

Please reply with your thoughts on this trip and we can also discuss at Sunday’s meeting.

A trip to the keys is always a blast for us. We’ve been to the dolphin experience several times over the past 30 years and it’s marvelous, especially in combination with a good place to eat. There are several great places only a few blocks away.

Was considering the Lazy Lobster since you previously recommended it and it is under the same ownership as Lazy Days where we had such a great meal on last years trip down there.

The pilot house on the water is also excellent and Key Largo Fisheries Backyard Cafe are only a few blocks away.

Love the idea. We would definitely like to attend.

    Rev’s Museum Trip

We had an incredible day at Rev’s yesterday. The museum is impeccable in the collection of rare sports and racing cars exhibited there. Has to be worth in the many millions of dollars. Club member Robert and his son drove down from Tampa to join us and unexpectantly, two couples from the San Diego Miata Club who are taking a cross country road trip, met up with us too. Wonderful day touring the museum, having lunch at Mel’s Diner and meeting new friends. Wonderful time was had by all!

Special thanks to the gentleman who was the docent for our tour and gave us great insight into the history of the estate. And thank you to all our loyal members who attended this trip, especially to Gary Koester for planning the trip for our club. It was a great day!

Redland Riot Road Rallye This Saturday

Redland Riot Road Rallye is with Robin Burr and Robert A. Burr.

For a quick reminder, here’s our Redland Riot Survival Guide tips:

Bring a small cooler to keep your strawberries fresh and cool. Unlike the grocery store, the fresh fruits and veggies you’ll get along the way were not picked while green and allowed to ripen in a truck or warehouse. They’re picked fresh and ready to be consumed right away.

Bring along some cash. A visit to the countryside is a return to simple ways and old-time methods of payment in some cases.

Be observant. Redland Riot Road Rallye clues are almost always in plain sight — on a sign, a product, a label, an image or a poster — if you’re paying attention.

Enjoy the slower pace of the Redland region. Take your time — it’s not a race. Have a few bites along the way and stop for lunch at one of the many wonderful venues you’ll pass. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Have fun! The road rallye is all about having fun with friends. Whether you’re crowned the winner, or come in dead last, you can enjoy a wacky good time with plenty of goodies, visiting fun places with nice people at every turn.

You can pre-register your car team online: http://www.redlandriot.com/Rallye.html

Video near The Gap and The Dragon

For those considering going to Miata’s at the Gap.  Cherohala Skyway is the Southern Edge of one of the recommended loops of driving “The Dragon.”

We were going from Asheville, NC to Atlanta, GA.  We traveled the whole Cherohala Skyway and then did scenic Tennessee highway 68 to get to GA.

Going this incredibly scenic route added just over an hour to the trip instead of doing it all in the interstate.

    Car is 2016 Club.

I feel like it’s cheating, but I have one of the Garmin VIRB cameras. A lot like a gopro. It has GPS, Altimeter and G-Force sensors built in.

I mostly just used the software that comes with it which allows you to position the various overlays. I did do some work with the audio in iMovie, but it’s not required.

Not so simple is getting engine data (from a bluetooth dongle that plugs into your cars OBDII port) to reliably be transferred to the camera. Still working on that.

Really nice video, Steve. How did you include the small route graphic and altimeter in the video?
