    Alert – Infotainment Center Issue

Heads up for anyone with a ND:

On Monday, I noticed that the LCD screen on my 2016 GT was displaying 4-7 white thin horizontal lines (see attached photo). It is most prominent on startup and fades a bit with use of the applications. I noticed when I was using the Nav and saw that parts of the map was broken up by the lines.

I usually set the display to off unless I am using the Navigation system or listening to music. So perhaps it might have started earlier. The car is garage kept and although I was driving it for about an 1hr in the sun, the display was not too hot to the touch.

Off to the dealer I went, knowing that most likely the display will need to be replaced (not in stock) under warranty. On a computer system its either the video card or the monitor. Plus the dash will need to be taken apart to replace the unit (it would be nice if I could get them to pre-wire the display for a backup camera – wishful thinking).

Anyway, I’ll keep you posted on the outcome. There is some chatter in the MX-5 Miata forum discussing the screen going completely blank. This has not happened to me, but for anyone with a hack, I would start to consider on a way to remove it should the need arise to have the display replaced. Not sure if they would argue that the issue is due to a hack and voids the warranty. I have not hacked my system, its what some were saying on the forum.

The entertainment center still functions it’s just the lines are annoying and indicative of pending failure.

July 10 Update: All fixed; zoom zoom again. Gunther replaced the display unit (list for approx $1100 plus labor) under warranty and they did it an hour. Yesterday I received a call from Teri (service rep) advising they received the part. Set appt for 8:30 today, arrived early and it was done; no hassle or issue.

Glad you got it fixed without any issues. Guess Cathy made it there without a problem.

Doesn’t seem to show up as much on…

The paint chip problem doesn’t seem to show up as much on our White ND. Looks like it chips the red off to show a white primer.

On Miata.net people were quoting like $2,500 for front, hood and rockers, so I discounted the Idea.

Andrew, how much of car is covered in the $900 you mentioned?

I found a place that does mostly exotics and went to see him. Had 2 Lambos, a Porsche and ZR1 in there being completely wrapped. Quoted me $800 to do the bumper and partial front of hood and fenders and mirrors. The name of the company is Auto Nuvo in Fort Lauderdale.

The entire front bumper, about 12″ of the hood and fenders, the mirrors, door handle and inside door panel (above the arm rest. I did not do the headlights. That cost a little over $900 in 2016. For the entire hood and fender, the price would have gone over $1500. My last car (that had PPF) was a 2003 Infinity G35 where I applied the sames areas and that worked very well. Back then, only had one large rock penetrate the film on the hood and left a very small chip/ding. I believe the film prevented serious damage from that impact. The film held until I sold the car in 2010. I use Plexus to clean, polish and maintain the PPF (also applies to window tint).

The company I used was Auto Supershield out of Boca.

Possible Horsepower Increase For 2019 Models

An article in Road & Track offers some clues as to possible 17% increase in horsepower for upcoming MX-5 ND models.

    https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/future-cars/a19037335/mazda-might-give-the-mx-5-miata-26-more-horsepower-for-2019/

The Mazda MX-5 has been widely hailed as a return to the original formula: a great-handling, lightweight car. It’s also been criticized by some for only having 155 horsepower. Mazda has repeatedly stated that it will focus on making the car faster by cutting more weight, but a new VIN filing shows that the MX-5 might also get a significant horsepower bump for the 2019 model year.

A document filed with NHTSA on February 27th shows that the MX-5 will continue to offer the trim levels we’re familiar with and a 2.0-liter engine, but the power rating has changed from 155 horsepower to 181. This would constitute a power increase of 17 percent—the biggest jump for any version of the naturally-aspirated SkyActiv-G motor.

ND CarbonMiata quilted floor mats/trunk liner FOR SALE (also a carbon fiber shifter surround)

Before I go the eBay route, in excellent shape, CarbonMiata quilted floor mats/trunk liner for the ND. Black with black stitching. $150

Also, *genuine* carbon fiber shifter surround for the manual transmission ND. Ridiculously light. Tapes on with 3M. (I never taped it on and let it sit on top just fine.) I got it from FuzionTechnique, but he doesn’t seem to have it for sale, so this may be a one of one design. $100
