Mazda MX-5 Miata Automatic Transmission Recall
Mazda is recalling 2016-2019 MX-5 Miata sports cars with automatic transmissions because an electrical problem could cause the cars to suddenly lose power and potentially result in a crash.
More than 14,000 cars are affected. Mazda says it’s not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this issue.
Vehicles recalled: Approximately 14,370 model year 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata sports cars with automatic transmissions.
The problem: A software problem in the transmission can cause an unexpected downshift, which may cause the vehicle to slow abruptly.
The fix: Dealers will update the transmission software in affected vehicles at no charge to owners, a Mazda spokesperson told CR.
How to contact the manufacturer: Owners can call Mazda at 800-222-5500. A Mazda spokesperson told CR that the automaker would notify owners of affected vehicles by March 29, 2019.
NHTSA campaign number: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has yet to issue a recall number for this campaign.

Mazda’s way of telling you this car is meant to be driven with a manual transmission.

Where did you buy your MX-5?
I purchased my last (of four) MX-5 Miatas at Ocean Mazda in Doral. Before that I had purchased or leased Mazda cars at Potemkin (deceased), then Grieco, then North Miami and Gunther.
Over the past 13 years, I have been servicing my Mazdas at Potemkin (deceased), Mazda South (deceased), Ocean and Gunther. Each has done a good job with service.
Let’s share info on the popular dealerships and service centers among our members. Please reply with a comment to share from which dealer you purchased you car and where you most often go for service. Or, if you bought from a non-dealer or prefer service at a favorite shop, or do it yourself.

2015 Mazda 3s GT – Greico of Delray, didn’t have a great experience
2016 Club – Royal Palm Mazda (defunct), much better that Greico, but pretty far away
Service: Palm Beach Mazda in North Palm Beach, cause it’s close to work. Honestly mostly only use them for warranty work. Usually don’t use a dealer for non-warranty work.
I do most of routine service myself either because I want better quality parts (Track level brake pads, AmsOil, Mobil 1), or I just find it quicker to do an Oil Change and Filter myself instead of the whole drop off at dealer routine.
Up until Frank retired a few years ago, all of my non-warranty work went to Goodman Auto in Delray, or German Car Depot (Audi) in Hollywood. Have had ok luck with Japanese Auto Care in Boca Raton, limited experience there.

Brought it at Gunther Mazda. I have brought two cars and leased one from them. I usually do my own maintenance servicing while tires are generally ordered from Tire Rack and sent to a local tire shop for install. Warranty work, at the dealer and specialized modification like BBK and, pro spec alignment and front sways-bars at Mazda Pros in Hollywood.

I purchased a brand new 1993 Mazda Miata from Eddie Accardi in Pompano Beach back in 1993. One hundred fifty thousand miles later and the car is still going strong. No matter what I do, it just won’t wear out! At this rate, I’ll never get to buy another new car! Shoulda bought a Yugo!

I purchased my RF online “pre-launch” and chose the nearest dealership to me to pick it up. In this case it was Ocean Mazda. I just showed up to buy the car, no negotiations. I am not satisfied with Ocean Mazda, I will not be returning there.

Edgar has done a great job on my 2001 Miata SE and I highly recommend his shop. Keith
