What Is Your Other Car?

MX5 sports car enthusiasts share the love of our sports cars, we enjoy road trips and gatherings, talking about our cars and gaining greater appreciation and knowledge of the subject.

But, many of us also have another car or two in the family. A two seater convertible is a great ride, but it’s not practical for every purpose under the sun.

So, what is your other car?

In our case, we need a car than can carry more luggage, scuba gear, Home Depot supplies, a few extra passengers, etc. I just turned in our second Mazda CX-5 for a new Kia Niro hybrid that gets more than 50 miles to the gallon, with a good aerodynamic design, good cargo space, lots of techie features and — again, about 600 miles on a small tank full of gas. When you start it up, there’s no noise. It rolls down the road very efficiently, it has very large batteries and an electric motor that delivers 29hp in addition to the efficient 1.6 liter 110 hp gas engine (total 195 ft lb torque) that comes on when you need power, or to recharge the battery bank. Once the car is rolling, it takes very little power to maintain speed. And, there is no drive shaft. Looking forward to taking it on a road trip up to Weeki Wachee to see the mermaids for a gathering of friends in a few weeks time to really test the roadworthiness.
